Standardized Tests
September 21, 2002

I have a problem with our approach to standardized tests. For the SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, everything, we study our butts off to get a high score, but what are we proving? That we're capable of learning all the nuances of a test? Isn't the point to discover how well we are likely to perform in school?

So, wouldn't it be easier if no one studied and we all took it cold-turkey? I think this would be the best option. What do you think?

I think the tests are stupid all together -- studying or no studying. Thank god I don't have to take one of those lame good-for-nothing tests ever again.

Interesting...I saw Ralph Nader speak on the 24th and he discussed standardized tests in his speech. He said they they allowed for a defined, narrow articulation of intelligence that only proves how well a person can fill in circles. He also referred to them as "specialized forms of fraud." I couldn't agree more.
