Hello, I am Matt Jacobs

There are others, but I am the one who makes websites. I’ve recently worked at OkCupid Labs, Say Media, and Six Apart Services. I specialize in front-end development, UI/UX and product management. When I’m not being nerdy, I tend to consume a lot of media, eat delicious food, follow most of the Chicago sports teams, and sing karaoke. Okay, I don’t sing all that much karaoke, but you have to admit that video is pretty impressive.

Previously, I was a founding editor of A Hamburger Today, wrote about movies at The Movie Binge and contributed to a few, now-defunct music sites. Recently, I’ve begun speaking a bit at conferences and meetups (Le Web and Django-NYC are the two latest).

I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn with my wife and grew up in Riverwoods, IL. I went to college at UW-Madison and high school at Deerfield High School. I have other family members and I like them a lot.

About Capn Design

I’ve been blogging since 1999 and doing it under the Capn Design moniker since May 2001 (prior to December 2000 I updated by hand, hence the lack of archives). There’s no good story behind the name Capn Design, but it certainly beats the early names I had for my blog — Matty’s Playground and Iodine Nation (where did I come up with that?). This is, I believe, the third major version of Capn Design.

I publish the blog using Movable Type and a little custom code to pull in the outside data (like Twitter and Last.fm). The custom fonts (FF Tisa Web Pro and FF Enzo Web) are provided by Typekit. The design draws inspiration from Khoi Vinh, Jason Kottke and the thousands of blogs I’ve read over the last 10 years.
