Almost six years after my initial post, Nike is finally making the Nike Air McFly’s (i.e. Nike Air MAG) a reality. The good news is they are being released tonight (!!). The bad news is that there are only 1,500 pairs and they’re being auctioned off. But, all of the money goes to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
There’s a 5-hour battery pack that powers the lights, but it’s not clear if it has the automatic laces (I can’t seem to find confirmation, anyway). There are a lot more pictures if you click through and I’ve included a couple hype videos below.
Update (9/15/11): If you want the full scoop on the launch and some background, Co Design has the full scoop. It doesn’t say so in the article, but they’ve already raised a million dollars, which is awesome. The article does say this:
Hatfield seemed to be hinting that items at more affordable price-points might be available after the auction closes on September 18. In fact, there’s already a lower tier: Ceramic models of the shoe were being sold at last night’s event for $88.00 (of course).
It’s possible, but still far from a sure thing, that Nike might have taken my advice and made the McFly. Now, all we’ve got so far is a patent filing from Nike’s Innovation Kitchen, but that’s way more than we had before. The quote Dime Mag took from the abstract:
An article of footwear with an automatic lacing system is disclosed. The automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper. The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper.
Nice Kicks lays out all of the photos from the filing and shows a charging station and pressure sensors in the soles. If these do get a general release, I have a feeling they’re going to be in the range of $250-300.
Divine intervention is the only way to explain that I just dropped five pairs of sneakers off for consignment at Flight Club this weekend. Someone upstairs knew I had to make room for the McFlys.
If you can’t wait to see what happens — and want more speculation fuel — I encourage you to check out the Delorean Dunks when they drop this Friday.
Core77 often runs 1-hour design challenges and the latest was building teeny-tiny sneakers out of Play-Doh. They’re nothing compared to the lovely pencil holders I build in art class in middle school, but they’re pretty neat. [via tien]
Kanye is working on a new line of sneakers in conjunction with Louis Vuitton and I've been following the releases on Sneaker News. These newest sneakers, which were leaked yesterday, feel more like the McFly 2015s than anything else that's come before.
I also have a strong suspicion these shoes were created at the same time as my favorite song from the new album, "Robocop". If I close my eyes, I can see Kanye wearing these shoes and a Tron helmet while eating a bowl of buttered popcorn and listening to "Robocop" at full volume. Love hurts and time (travel) heals all wounds.
